History of Nintendo
A visual legacy

Nintendo's Visual Legacy

From playing card manufacturer to global gaming giant, Nintendo has one of the richest visual identities in entertainment history.

1889
Founded in Kyoto, Japan by Fusajiro Yamauchi as a hand-crafted Hanafuda playing card manufacturer.
1977
Nintendo releases the Color TV-Game — their first foray into the video game market, sold exclusively in Japan.
1981
Donkey Kong debuts in arcades, introducing Jumpman — soon to become Mario. Nintendo of America is established.
1983
The Famicom launches in Japan. It arrives in North America as the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) in 1985, revitalizing the video game industry after the crash of 1983.
1989
The original Game Boy launches, designed by Gunpei Yokoi. Bundled with Tetris, it becomes one of the best-selling handhelds of all time.
1990
The Super Nintendo Entertainment System launches in Japan. Super Mario World and A Link to the Past define an era of 16-bit gaming.
1996
The Nintendo 64 brings 3D gaming mainstream. Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time set industry benchmarks that still resonate today.
2001
The GameCube launches alongside the Game Boy Advance. Despite modest sales, GCN hosts beloved titles like Metroid Prime, Pikmin, and Wind Waker.
2004
The Nintendo DS launches with dual screens and a touch interface, going on to become one of the best-selling handheld consoles ever made at over 154 million units.
2006
The Wii launches with revolutionary motion controls, becoming a cultural phenomenon. Wii Sports and Twilight Princess help it reach audiences far beyond traditional gamers.
2008
The Nintendo DSi arrives — an upgraded DS with dual cameras, an online shop, and downloadable software, setting the stage for the digital era of Nintendo handhelds.
2011
The Nintendo 3DS launches as the world's first handheld with glasses-free stereoscopic 3D. Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 drive strong sales worldwide.
2012
The Wii U launches — Nintendo's first HD console and the first to feature a touchscreen GamePad controller. Despite innovative titles, it underperforms commercially with around 13.5 million units sold.
2015
President Satoru Iwata passes away in July, leaving a profound legacy. He led Nintendo through some of its most creative eras and had begun development on what would become the Switch.
2017
The Nintendo Switch launches on March 3 — a hybrid console that works both as a home system and a portable handheld. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild redefines open-world design at launch. It becomes Nintendo's best-selling console ever.
2019
The Nintendo Switch Lite launches as a compact handheld-only version. Pokémon Sword & Shield and Animal Crossing: New Horizons (2020) drive the Switch to record-breaking sales during the pandemic era.
2021
The Nintendo Switch – OLED Model arrives with a larger 7-inch OLED display, improved audio, and a wider adjustable stand. The Switch family now totals over 100 million units.
2023
The Nintendo Switch surpasses the DS as Nintendo's all-time best-selling console family, exceeding 140 million units. The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom sells over 20 million copies in its first year.
2025
The Nintendo Switch 2 launches on June 5 — powered by a custom NVIDIA Tegra T239 chip, featuring a 7.9″ 1080p 120Hz HDR display, 4K output when docked, 12 GB of RAM, and new Joy-Con 2 controllers with a "C" button and mouse-like functionality. GameChat and GameShare introduce new social play features. The Switch 2 marks the beginning of Nintendo's next era.

About Nintendo Logo Resource

This resource was established to contribute to Nintendo's graphic design community. Being a graphic design student with a huge interest in everything Nintendo, I found it a nightmare to find logos to produce artwork with.

Hopefully this resource will be key to any designer setting up a Nintendo fansite or creating personal fan artwork. Although I've strived to create a full database of all the logos Nintendo have used over the years, it is still not complete — contributions are always welcome.

Legal Notice

All Nintendo logos on this website, including artwork, digital downloads and other files, are the property of Nintendo of America Inc. and Nintendo Co. Ltd. of Japan, protected by United States and international copyright, trademark and intellectual property laws.

This is a database of logos for personal and non-commercial use only.

Creator

Created and maintained by eoinstan — a graphic design student and passionate Nintendo fan. Questions, suggestions and contributions are always welcome.
